Natural vaginal environment
Special intimate area of woman comprises of vagina and its environment. The vaginal folds have good population of Lactobacillus bacteria. Lactobacillus helps to maintain adequate lactic acid levels in the environment. Lactic acid helps to maintain normal vaginal acidic pH. Normal vaginal acidic pH (pH 3.8-4.8) is a protective shield that inhibits growth of pathogens.
Cleansing with water dilutes lactic acid presence and hence pH goes above 4.8. Use of alkaline soaps elevates this pH to more than 4.8. If this pH goes beyond 5, non-conducive environment for harmful pathogen growth is reduced, and therefore these harmful pathogens start growing.
pH stands for power of hydrogen. A figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which, 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid and higher values more alkaline.
All body organs have optimum efficiency in organ specific pH. Healthy vaginal pH is around 3.8. Vaginal acidic pH is due to lactic acid which is generated by sizeable Lactobacillus bacteria population which is a friendly bacteria. pH around 3.8 makes it non-conducive for pathogens to grow. Reduction in Lactobacillus population reduces lactic acid concentration, so pH rises to 4.5. Rise in pH reduces inhospitable conditions for harmful pathogens and these pathogens start growing. Increase in pathogen manifests into signs & symptoms of intimate area discomfort like itching, irritation, vaginal dryness, burning sensation and vaginal discharge.
Washing vaginal folds with water dilutes lactic acid concentration in immediate environment, leading to increase in pH to more than 4.0. pH condition becomes favourable for growth of pathogens.
Water plus soap wash disturbs enormously the vaginal acidic environment. Water has neutral pH = 7, while soaps have alkaline pH= 8-10. Therefore, immediately after bath with water & soap, vaginal pH increases. In some women this pH (4.5 or more) opens flood gates to pathogen growth. Woman experiences intimate area discomfort like itching, irritation, vaginal dryness, burning sensation and vaginal discharge.
Semen of men is alkaline in nature. The soapy, slippery fluids secreted by males during coitus helps smooth coital relationship. So vaginal acidic pH is disturbed immediately after intercourse. If intimate care or personal hygiene is not undertaken, then pathogens find opportunity to grow and create discomfort in intimate areas. Pregnancy & post-operative conditions also require maintenance of healthy pH for optimal functioning of vagina. A woman just cannot have intimate area discomfort and thus be uncomfortable in both the situations.
Therefore, pH balance is vital for functioning of vagina. pH of 3.5-3.8 is ideal for survival of good bacteria – Lactobacillus. Lactic acid released by Lactobacillus population inhibits growth of pathogens. A woman healthy inside is healthy outside. Water and soaps disturb this finely tuned pH equilibrium. pH disturbance in form of rise in pH leads to growth of pathogens. Intimate area discomfort is shown in form of itching, irritation, vaginal dryness, burning sensation, vaginal discharge etc.
Intimate area discomfort, makes a woman very uncomfortable which affects her quality and confidence level of her life.
Imbalance of Vaginal pH
Factors affecting the natural balance of pH in the vagina
- Use of synthetic underwear and tight cloths.
- Inadequate feminine hygiene.
- Use of soap for intimate area cleaning (alkaline pH of soap distrubs vaginal acidic pH).
- Use of scented tampons, pads and not changing them at stipulated time.
- Use of sprays of intolerable pH values.
- Excessive douching.
- Unprotected sexual activity not followed by adequate intimate hygiene.
- Side effects of birth control pills.
- Side effects of drugs such as antibacterial.
- Stress and fatigue.
- Imbalance diet.
